Afterschool and Athletic Activities

During the school year, we operate THE UNDERGROUND, which includes homework help, small groups, Bible studies, life skills training, college and career investigation, and a choice of electives.  Staff members invest in students and mentor them, helping them recognize that they are valuable to God and to others.  This program serves as many as 15 students in grades 9-12.

In all our afterschool programs, our staff members model healthy relationships with one another and with students, so that young people can learn to treat each other with respect. Through Bible studies and life application discussions, students grow in their knowledge and love of God, and how they can follow Christ in their daily activities. Our program coordinators include certified educators, and our teachers are trained, caring adults.  For more information, contact Bruce Foster.

Throughout the school year we operate a BASKETBALL TEAM for young men who want to play on an organized squad under the leadership of caring coaches and youthworkers.  Participants have regular practice times which include Bible study.  The team competes in the Urban Impact League and Greater Pittsburgh Independent Basketball League, and meets Tuesday through Thursday from 4:00 to 6:30 pm, and on Saturday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.  Interested students should call Lorenze Jefferson, High School Coordinator, at 412/321-1678.

In the summer, THE UNDERGROUND is an eight-week program for 40 students that features recreational activities, breakfast and lunch, age-specific experiential education activities, outdoor trips, a week-long service trip, and occasional “nights out.”  A low staff-to-student ratio allows for highly relational activities. 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, although times for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays vary due to our trip schedules.   To get involved, contact Lorenze Jefferson, High School Associate.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

For 45 select students in grades 10-12, we offer LEADERS-IN-TRAINING, a rigorous three-year leadership training opportunity that prepares participants for college and the work world.  Participants begin with small group job training, one-on-one mentoring, Bible study, and volunteer service activities.  Those who successfully complete these components are then eligible for paid work experience, assisting our staff in one of our other ministries.  Applicants must be in tenth grade and be at least 14 years old.  Interested students should call Rick Mason, Leadership Development Coordinator, at 412/321-1678, for an application.  We enroll students only twice a year.  Applications are due no later than October 2, 2009, for the fall semester and February 26, 2010, for the spring semester.

Our PRE-L.I.T. program engages 10 selected ninth grade students in job training, decision-making skills, and helping others through service projects.  Those who complete one year in the Pre-L.I.T. program may compete for a position in the Leaders-In-Training program.  Applications are due no later than October 2, 2009.  The program meets twice a week for one hour.  Interested students should contact Rick Mason, Leadership Development Coordinator, for an application.
